Glossary
Customer vs. Tenant vs. and Service vs. Workload
Customer refers to the school, company, or organization that purchased the Microsoft 365 service(s). We typically refer to a customer by their name, for example, Contoso, Inc., Maple University, or Microsoft Corporation. The customer is often equated as the top parent identification (TPID), which is often the identifier for a customer that is referenced.
Tenant refers to the logical grouping of services (and the data stored in those services) that the customer has purchased. We refer to a tenant by the tenant name (contoso.onmicrosoft.com) or the tenant ID (a GUID). Some customers only have one tenant. However, a customer can have multiple tenants.
- Service and Workload are used interchangeably to describe the Microsoft 365 service the customer has purchased licenses for from Microsoft.
